Valkyries Avenge Early Season Loss Against Emmanuel

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – It came down to the final relay race of the day but the Converse University women's swim team defeated Emmanuel 135.5-125.5 inside the Montgomery Student Center on Saturday morning.

With the win the Valkyries improve to 3-8 overall on the season and 3-5 in Conference Carolinas action. The victory was also the Valkyries first home win of the swim season.

Alison Ludeman was the top performer for the swim team on Saturday morning. Ludeman tallied a total of 485 points and finished with a trio of first place finishes and one second place finish on the afternoon. Maya Guevara finished second on the team with 540.3 points and four first place finishes. Kayla Smith finished third on the team with 581.5 points, with three first place finishes and one runner-up finish.

The Valkyries started off the meet with a bang as the 200 medley relay team of Mayle Iwanski, Ember Hill, Guevara and Smith finished first with a time of 1:50.98. The Valkyries B team of Liz Klanderman, Kate Hollingsworth, Hannah Huante and Juli Ganim finished third with a time of 1:54.73.

In the 1000 free event, Valerie Perez hit a season best time of 11:32.38 and finished third overall. Kaitlin Williams finished right behind in fourth place with a total time of 11:52.97. In the 200 free event, Ludeman won with a time of 2:00.25 just beating out the Emmanuel swimmer by four tenths of a seconds. Juli Ganim finished fifth in the event with a time of 2:11.59.

Iwanski finished second in the 50 back event with a time of 28.94 seconds and Klanderman finished right behind in third place with a personal best time of 29.98 seconds. Gabriella Pinheiro tied for fifth in the event with a time of 32.95 seconds.

In the 50 breast event, Hollingsworth finished second with a personal best time of 32.58 seconds. Huante finished close behind in third place, with a personal best time of 32.89 seconds. Ember Hill rounded out the Valkyries in the event with a fourth place finish.

Guevara won the 100 fly event with a time of 58.32 seconds, the freshman was the only swimmer to break the one minute mark in the race. Williams and Perez both finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Ludeman picked up her second individual win of the day in the 50 free event. Ludeman finished with a total time of 25.79 seconds. Ganim finished third in the event with a time of 26.32 seconds, while Marie Durflinger and Pinheiro finished in both fifth and sixth respectively.
Freshman Kayla Smith won the 100 free event with a time of 52.48 seconds, Ganim finished third with a personal best time of 57.06 seconds. Durflinger came in fifth place with a total time of 1:02.16.

In the 100 back event, Ludeman finished second overall with a time of 1:05.17 and Klanderman finished two tenths of second later in third place for the Valkyries. Pinheiro finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 1:15.18.

In the 100 breast event, Hill, Hollingsworth and Huante finished in second, third and fourth respectively. Hollingsworth set a personal best time of 1:11.03 in the event, while Huante finished with a season best time of 1:11.57. In the 500 free event, Perez, Iwanski and Williams finished in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

In the 50 fly event Guevara won the event with personal best time of 26.39 seconds, fellow Valkyrie Kayla Smith finished in second place with a personal best time of 26.45 seconds. Ember Hill finished in fifth place with a personal best time of 29.98 seconds.

Hollingsworth finished second in the 100 IM event with a personal best time of 1:04.42, while Huante finished fourth overall with a season best time of 1:04.89. Klanderman rounded out the top five with a personal best time of 1:06.67 in the event.

In the final event of the afternoon, the Valkyries A team of Guevara, Ludeman, Iwanski and Smith won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.39 to clinch the meet win for the Valkyries. The Converse B team of Williams, Perez, Pinheiro and Durflinger finished fourth with a time of 1:52.03 in the event.

The women's swim team will hit the road this coming weekend with races at Lenoir-Rhyne and King.
