Louisville, Ky. – In a week that saw junior pitcher
Riley Lingerfelt strikeout 30 batters, record two complete-game victories and a save, and post the first no-hitter and perfect game in school history, the Welcome native has earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Naitonal Pitcher of the Week Honors. In her 13.0 innings pitched, she held opponents to a .136 batting average. She is the first Valkyrie to be named National Pitcher of the Week by the NFCA.
Earlier on Tuesday it was announced that Lingerfelt earned Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week honors.
Lingerfelt struck out 30 of the 47 batters she faced in her three appearances, a strikeout percentage of 63.8%. She has recorded 61 strikeouts this season and is currently fifth in the national in strikeouts.
She set the tone for the week early as she fanned 11 batters in a complete-game victory over St. Andrews, setting a new school record for strikeouts in a game. The Valkyries won the game 18-0, tying the program record for single-game scoring.
The Welcome, North Carolina native kicked off Friday's doubleheader by breaking her own two-day old record with 13 strikeouts on her way to recording the first perfect game and no-hitter in program history. She appeared in the second game of the evening against Lincoln (Pa.) and recorded a three-inning save.
The Valkyries return to the diamond on Thursday, Feb. 22 as they head to Greeneville, Tennessee to take on the Tusculum Pioneers.
