Women’s Tennis Looks to Continue Winning Ways against Lees-McRae

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team will stay on the road this week with a midweek matchup against Lees-McRae on Tuesday afternoon.
 
This will be the 14th matchup between Converse and Lees-McRae dating back to the 2008-09 tennis season. Converse is 9-4 all-time against the Bobcats but Lees-McRae got the better of the Valkyries last season, winning 6-1 in Spartanburg. The Valkyries lone point in the contest from last season came from Maria Belen Vendrell's straight sets win at the No. 1 singles court against the Bobcats.
 
Converse Notes:
  • Converse is 3-8 overall this season and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries went 1-1 this past weekend with a win over USC Sumter.  
  • Last timeout the Valkyries won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts. In singles action, Converse clinched the match with wins from Khushi Kharb, Sofia Giaraldo-Jimenez and Alexandra Romero.  
  • Kharb leads the Valkyries with five wins playing the majority of her matches at the No. 2 singles flights. Lais Martins and Marleen Prinz are both second on the team with three wins each at their respective flights.
  • The Valkyries No. 1 doubles tandem of Tonya Glogowski-Watson/Kharb is 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play. The pairing has won eight straight matches dating back to the start of February. The Valkyries No.2 pairing of Martins/Prinz is 3-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference action.   
 
Lees-McRae Notes:
  • Lees-McRae is 1-6 overall and they have yet to play a conference match this season. The Bobcats will be playing not only their first game in 20 days but also their first home game of the season.
  • Last time out the Bobcats lost 7-0 to Western Carolina University.
  • Pati Sanchez Vedia leads the team with a trio of singles wins, while Rhidaim Yang is second on the team with two wins on the year.
  • In doubles action this season, the tandems of Begum Gumussoy/Lina Saquot Ngassi and Sanchez Vedia/Yang are tied for the lead with a pair of wins on the season at their respective flights.
