Seven Valkyries Honored With CSC Academic All-District Distinction

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a successful season for both the men's and women's tennis programs, seven Converse University Valkyries were named CSC Academic All-District honorees on Tuesday, as announced by the College Sports Communicators. They are: sophomore Mathis Blary, junior Takuma Furumaki, senior Laurel Maynor, sophomore Tamanna Panwar, junior Manuel Roncero, sophomore Romy Rueff and sophomore Lucas Walker.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have a 3.5 GPA and sophomore status both academically and athletically. A student-athlete must also be in the lineup for 75% of the team's dual matches.

Blary, a sophomore business administration major from Feucherolles, France, anchored the Valkyries lineup at No. 1 singles, picking up six of the team's nine wins at the highest court this season. He also won five matches at No. 2 singles for an overall singles record of 12-10. He also recorded a 6-3 doubles record.

Furumaki, a junior business administration major from Shizuoka-shi, Japan, led the Valkyries with a 16-6 singles record, making an appearance at all five top positions. He played his most matches at No. 4 singles, where he achieved a 7-4 record. He was undefeated at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Furumaki posted a 16-8 doubles record, going 11-5 at his primary court of No. 1 doubles. Along with partner Ben Hyde-Smith, Furumaki broke into the national doubles rankings early in the season. They peaked at No. 15 in the rankings released on March 11.

Maynor, a senior politics major from Mount Pleasant, recorded six singles victories this season, five of which came on her primary court of No. 4 singles. She also won nine doubles matches, with all nine coming at her primary court of No. 2 doubles.

Panwar, a sophomore economics major from New Delhi, India, won eight single matches this season, securing five of those on her primary court of No. 2 singles. She also won nine doubles matches this season, picking up seven of those wins on her primary court of No. 3 doubles.

Roncero, a data science major from Valencia, Spain, posted a 15-7 singles record, playing all matches almost equally across the bottom five spots in the lineup. He was 9-3 in conference action this season. He also went 7-3 in doubles play this season, recording a 6-2 record at his primary position of No. 3 doubles.

Rueff, a sophomore mathematics major from Speyer, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, led all Valkyries in singles wins with a 16-8 record, posting a 7-4 record at her primary court of No. 5 singles. She also won nine doubles matches this season, with eight of those coming at No. 2 doubles.

Walker, a sophomore business administration major from Eemnes, Utrecht, Netherlands, posted a 13-8 singles record with a 6-3 record at his primary court of No. 3 singles. He picked up another four wins at No. 2 singles. Walker shined in doubles play with a 15-9 record and an 8-6 record at his primary position of No. 2 singles.
