Box Score BELMONT, N.C.- Converse fell to the top seeded Belmont Abbey in the semi-finals for the second time in successive seasons with a 2-0 defeat on Thursday afternoon. Converse ends the season with a 12-7-1 record while Belmont Abbey improved to 16-2-1.
Converse came out of the gate with a dangerous shot in the first minute of the match. Alex Marquez (West Hills, Calif.) went on a break away but found the post and spun away.
Two minutes later Belmont Abbey's keeper took an errant pass and sent the ball up the right side of the pitch. The Crusader's attack led to a goal in the 3'.
Both teams battled back and forth the remaining minutes of the first stanza but Converse couldn't find the equalizer and kept Belmont Abbey out of the back of the net.
Once again Converse came out of the break with a dangerous shot but Darby Boyd's (Nags Head, N.C.) shot sailed to the right.
Belmont Abbey would add to the goal count in the 47'. Abbey sent in a corner kick and found the head of the Crusader Shelton. Shelton headed the ball over to Lang for the goal in the near post for a 2-0 advantage.
The Crusaders tried to make it 3-0 in the 52' but Savannah Humphries (Boiling Springs, S.C.) kept the Abbey 1v1 attack at bay with a great diving save coming off the line in the middle of the box.
Humphries made another great save in the 88' when C. Coutinho sent a curling ball into the far post but was snatched out of the air by Humphries.
Humphries had six saves on the match. Josee Waitrovich (Waupaca, Wisc.) allowed one goal and had four saves.
The group of seniors: Darby Boyd, Cimone Francis, Georgia Jones, Natalie Johnson, Olivia Grose, Erika Hanson, Mikhaila Lisicki, and Bethany Spivey leave the program with the most wins in program history (42), most postseason victories (2), and the best winning percentage (54.5%)
