GREENSBORO, Ga. – The Converse University golf team finished fifth overall at the Newberry College Women's Fall Invitational.
The two day event was a challenging event for most teams at the Harbor Club this past week. The Valkyries finished middle of the pack and right behind fellow Conference Carolinas schools Barton and Young Harris.
As a team the Valkyries finished second in Par 3 scoring with an average of 3.55, they finished seventh in Par 4 scoring with an average of 4.69 and they finished ninth in Par 5 scoring with an average of 5.72. The Valkyries ranked fourth overall in the tournament in holes birdied with eight and in holes pared with 79. Converse had the least amount of holes double bogeyed in the two round event.
Individually, freshman
Avery Smith and Lilly Bowman led the charge for the Valkyries in the two day event. Smith finished ninth overall with a total score of 157 and the lowest single round score for Converse at 76. Bowman finished just outside the top-10 with a 12
th place finish and carded a two day score of 161.
Both Bowman and Smith led the Valkyries in Par 3 scoring with a 3.38 average for the tournament. Bowman was the top Valkyrie in Par 4 scoring with a 4.40 scoring average and Smith boasted the best Par 5 scoring average in the tournament at an even 5.00. Both players also tied for the team lead in total birdies (3) and pars (17).
Ellie Lim finished third on the team and 22
nd overall in the event with a two-day score of 168. Lim was the only other Valkyrie outside of Smith to record a round in the 70s this week. The junior carded a 79 in the opening round of the event on Monday afternoon.
Kali Lantis finished fourth on the team and 31
st overall with a tournament score of 173. Lantis made the biggest jump from day one to day two, shaving off nine strokes from her opening round score.
Ashley Azzaro in her second tournament for the Valkyries finished fifth on the team and 41
st overall with a score of 180.
