Valkyrie Classic Tournament Page:
The tournament page, which can be found at this link, will update with information as the weekend progresses.
Converse Notes:
- The Valkyries are coming off the best season in program history, rewriting the record book at the plate and in the circle.
- Converse was tabbed 12th in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll.
- Senior outfielder Sydney Watson, senior pitcher Riley Lingerfelt and sophomore third baseman Kiarra Thomas were all tabbed Preseason Players to Watch.
- Watson, a senior from Plant City, Florida, also rewrote the Valkyries' record book last season. She holds the record for single-season batting average, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage. Following the 2024 season, Watson was named as a second-team all-conference selection, the program's second-ever all-conference selection. She was also named a CSC Academic All-American, Converse University's second-ever Academic All-American selection.
- Lingerfelt, a senior from Welcome, North Carolina, posted the most prolific pitching season in program history during her junior campaign in 2024. She sits at first in the Converse record book in single-season ERA, WHIP, wins, appearances, solo shutouts and opponent batting average. On Feb. 16, 2024, Lingerfelt tossed the first, and to date only, perfect game in program history.
- Thomas, a sophomore from Blythewood, South Carolina, appeared in all 54 games last season for the Valkyries. She is second all-time in program history in single-season: doubles, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage.
- The Valkyries have 11 additions to the roster from last season: six of the additions are transfers and five are freshmen.
Catawba Notes:
- Catawba was selected eighth in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll.
- The Catawba Indians had four student-athletes selected to the SAC's Preseason All-Conference teams: outfielder Brianna Gallagher (First Team), first baseman Kary Hales (First Team), utility/pitcher Brianna Herring (First Team) and pitcher Alexandra Baquie (Second Team).
- While the Valkyries and Catawba Indians will not face off this weekend, they are scheduled to face off during the Catawba Round Robin in Salisbury, North Carolina on Feb. 22.
Erskine Notes:
- The Flying Fleet was selected to finish 13th in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll.
- Erskine had three student-athletes from the Carolinas tabbed as Players to Watch: junior catcher Gabby Burroughs, senior infielder Brooke Patterson and freshman infielder Kennedy Crouch.
- As Conference Carolinas members, Erskine and Converse will not face off this weekend. They are scheduled to play on Friday, April 4 in Due West.
Glenville State Notes:
- The Pioneers were selected to finish third in the Mountian East South Division by the league's preseason poll.
- Glenville State returns eight out of their nine starters in the lineup and three out of their four pitchers in the rotation.
- The Pioneers are coming off one of the best seasons in program history, winning 26 games (most since joining the MEC) and finishing 2nd in the MEC Southern Division (highest finish in school history).
- Sunday's game between the Valkyries and Pioneers will be the first time the two teams have faced off on the diamond.
King Notes:
- The Tornado was selected to finish fourth in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll. Despite the high ranking in the poll, they are the second team among the five Northwest Division member institutions, as North Greenville was ranked second and received two first-place votes.
- King had three student-athletes tabbed Players to Watch for the 2025 season: graduate outfielder Jessica Campbell (2023 Second Team All-American by NFCA and D2CCA and 2023 Conference Carolinas First Team All-Conference), junior pitcher/first baseman Savana Luper (2024 Conference Carolinas Second Team All-Conference) and senior outfielder Tori Ryan (2024 Conference Carolinas First Team All-Conference and 2024 Second Team NFCA All-Region).
- The Valkyries and the Tornado will not face off this weekend as the pair have four divisional contests to play later in the season. The two first square off on Wednesday, March 26 in Bristol, Tennessee before the Valkyries host King at Tyger River Stadium on Tuesday, April 8. Both competition dates are scheduled to be doubleheaders beginning at 2 P.M.
Limestone Notes:
- The Saints were selected to finish ninth in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll, one spot behind Catawba.
- Sophomore pitcher Chelsey Stonesifer was selected as a Player to Watch by the South Atlantic Conference.
- Limestone is the only team Converse will face twice in the Valkyrie Classic, with one game on Friday and the other on Saturday.
Lynn Notes:
- The Fighting Knights begin their season for the second consecutive year at the Valkyrie Classic. Last year they posted a record of 2-4 at Tyger River Park.
- In a Sunshine State Conference that boasts multiple national championship contenders, Lynn was selected last in the league's preseason poll.
- The Fighting Knights claimed their only matchup ever against the Valkyries last season by a score of 13-10.
USC Beaufort Notes:
- The Sand Sharks are coming off of a 20-25 season in 2024, their first as an NCAA Division II member institution.
- For the second season in Division II, the Sand Sharks were selected to finish eighth out of nine teams in the Peach Belt Preseason Coaches Poll. They were one point ahead of Augusta in last place.
- The Valkyries and Sand Sharks will square off on the diamond for the first time ever on Sunday.
- Prior to making their way to Spartanburg on Sunday, USC Beaufort has a doubleheader in the upstate with Anderson on Saturday.
West Virginia Wesleyan Notes:
- West Virginia Wesleyan was selected to finish fifth out of six teams in the Mountain East South Division by the league's preseason poll.
- The Bobcats finished the 2024 season 17-32.
- Much like the trio of Conference Carolinas schools in the weekend lineup, Converse, Erskine and King, WVWU and Glenville State, both members of the Mountain East's south division, will not square off at the Valkyrie Classic. They are scheduled to play on March 22 in Buckhannon, West Virginia and on April 26 in Glenville, West Virginia. Both dates are doubleheaders and will begin at 1 P.M.
