Softball Looks to Carry On Winning Ways Against Shaw and Lincoln

The Teams:
Converse (4-8) vs Shaw (0-0) & Lincoln (Pa.) (0-2)
Series History: This will be the first game against both Shaw and Lincoln for the Valkyries.

Converse Notes:
  • Converse enters the game after sweeping Wednesday's doubleheader against St. Andrews. The Valkyries took game one 18-0 and game two 9-2.
  • The Valkyries tied the school record for most runs in a game in the first game against St. Andrews. It is the most runs posted by Converse in a win.
  • Junior Riley Lingerfelt set the school record for strikeouts in a game with 11. She joins Marissa Steadman as the only Valkyries to ever record a double-digit strikeout game. Both Lingerfelt and Steadman have two such games.
  • Five Valkyries recorded a multi-hit game against the Knights while sophomores Ayellad Howard and Chesney Miles each recorded multiple hits in both games.

Shaw Notes:
  • The Valkyries will serve as the Bears' season opener. They were scheduled to play UNC Pembroke and Mars Hill in a round robin on Feb. 10 and 11, but it was canceled due to weather in Pembroke.
  • Shaw posted a 7-20 record last season with six of those wins coming during CIAA competition.
  • The team's top pitcher from the 2023 season, junior D'Amani Gadson returns for the Bears. She pitched 88.2 of the team's 158.1 innings. That is 56% of the Bears' season. She posted a 7.21 ERA.
  • Gadson is also the team's top returning hitter. She posted a .375 batting average in 2023 and started all 27 games. She led the team in RBIs with 22.

Lincoln (Pa.):
  • Lincoln has competed twice in the 2024 season with both games coming in a doubleheader against Morgan State. The Lions lost 8-0 in a run-rule shortened game one and 6-0 in game two.
  • In 2023, Lincoln posted a 13-26 record and was 5-11 in CIAA play.
  • Only two players have recorded a hit this season freshman Ashley Stringer and junior Irlynn Richardson.
  • Sophomore Tia Brown is the team's top returning batter with a 2023 batting average of .351.
