SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Just under a week out from first pitch, Converse University softball head coach
Jackie Huff announced the team's schedule for the upcoming season. The Valkyries play 26 games at home, 24 games on the road and four games at neutral sites.
When accounting for travel to and from the Tyger River Complex located in Duncan and host of Converse's home games, the Valkyries will travel over 3,900 miles across five states before the Conference Carolinas Tournament in late April.
The season kicks off with the Valkyrie Classic at Tyger River Park Feb. 2-4. Converse will host Limestone, Lynn, Mars Hill and St. Thomas Aquinas with each team playing two games each day of the tournament.
Converse follows that up with their second tournament of the season, the Old Coast Classic hosted by Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. The Valkyries kick off the Classic with a pair of teams from the south region on Saturday, Feb. 10 as they start tournament play with Saint Leo and follow that game up with Edward Waters. Converse then plays a doubleheader against Flagler College of the Peach Belt Conference before turning to Spartanburg.
Love is in the air for the Valkyries' doubleheader against St. Andrews as the Valkyries host the Knights on Valentine's Day. The week concludes as Converse makes a Friday-night guest appearance in the CIAA/SIAC Challenge at Tyger River Park for matchups with Shaw and Lincoln on Friday, Feb. 16.
The Valkyries follow with six more nonconference double headers before beginning Conference Carolinas play on March 13 against North Greenville: at Tusculum (Feb. 22), at USC Aiken (Feb. 24), Allen (Feb. 26), at Coker (March 3), Georgia College (March 7) and Claflin (March 10).
Converse remains home for their second doubleheader of conference play as they host UNC Pembroke, alma mater of assistant coach Tanner Bullard, on March 16.
The purple and gold then head on the road for two doubleheaders against northwest division opponents: regaining Conference Carolinas regular season champions King on March 19 and Belmont Abbey on March 22.
A pair of in-state foes follow to conclude the weekend as Converse first hosts Southern Wesleyan on March 23 and then heads to Anderson to take on the Trojans.
Converse wraps up their first go-round of division play with by hosting Lees-McRae on March 27. The Valkyries follow that with three conference road doubleheaders: Emmanuel (April 2), Barton (April 5) and Chowan (April 6). Converse wraps up the spring break road trip with a doubleheader against Carson-Newman of the South Atlantic Conference on April 8.
A trio of division doubleheaders wrap up the season for the Valkyries. First, Belmont Abbey makes their return trip to Spartanburg for senior day on April 13. Converse wraps up their home slate of games on April 16 against King. The final doubleheader of the season comes on the road against Lees-McRae on April 20.
The Conference Carolinas Softball Championship begins on April 25 at Tyger River Park in Duncan.
