TIGERVILLE, S.C. – With a lead-off home run in the top of the fourth inning of game two of the team's doubleheader against the North Greenville Trailblazers, senior
Kiarra Thomas tied the Converse University softball team's program record for career home runs at 21. The Valkyries fell in both games, losing game one 13-5 in five innings and game two 3-2.
With the loss, Converse falls to 9-27 on the season and 5-11 in Conference Carolinas play. North Greenville improves to 23-13 and 13-3 in conference action.
Game One: North Greenville 13, Converse 5 (5 Inn.)
The Valkyries struck first as freshman
Alexis Felker drew a one-out bases-loaded walk in the top half of the first inning. NGU scored six runs in the bottom of the inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the second.
A wild pitch and a one-out single plated two runs for the Valkyries in the top of the third inning. The Trailblazers scored one run in the bottom of the inning.
NGU scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Graduate student
Megan Monk drove in a run for the Valkyries in the top of the fifth, and a wild pitch scored another Valkyrie run, but NGU held on and won 13-5 in five innings.
Game Two: North Greenville 3, Converse 2
The Trailblazers plated the first run of the game with a one-out RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning.
After a scoreless second and third, Thomas led off the fourth inning with her record-tying home run to left-center field, tying the game 1-1. NGU reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning. They scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
A one-out walk came around to score for the Valkyries in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out single by Felker, but Converse was unable to score the tying run and fell 3-2.
On deck for the Valkyries
The Valkyries return to action tomorrow, March 28, as they host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at Tyger River Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 P.M.
