Valkyries Fall to Crusaders on Saturday Afternoon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University softball team fell in both games of their Saturday afternoon Conference Carolinas doubleheader with the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. They fell 8-2 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

With the losses, Converse falls to 9-29 and 5-13 in Conference Carolinas action. Belmont Abbey improves to 18-16 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Game One: Belmont Abbey 8, Converse 2

Belmont Abbey struck first with two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third.

Converse scratched back one run in the bottom of the fourth inning as a lead-off double from senior Aubree Leonard turned into a run on the next at-bat with an RBI single from freshman Tyler Karabach.

Belmont Abbey added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a Converse error. A Belmont-Abbey error in the bottom of the inning added the Valkyries' second and final run of the game.

The Crusaders added another run in the top of the seventh inning and won 8-2.

Game Two: Belmont Abbey 5, Converse 3

A two-out home run in the top of the first inning started the scoring for the Crusaders. A two-out single in the top of the second doubled the lead.

The Crusaders added their third run of the game on a two-out bases-loaded walk in the top of the third. They secured their fourth run in the fourth inning with a one-out sac fly.

Senior Madison Davis drove in two runs for the Valkyries with a one-out double into left-center field. Freshman Eryn Wright, running for Davis, came around to score as graduate student Megan Monk hit her own double into left-center field.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, Belmont Abbey scored the game's final run in the seventh inning with a two-out single up the middle. They held on to win 5-3.

On deck for the Valkyries
The Valkyries return to action on Wednesday, April 1, as they head to Greeneville, Tennessee, to take on the Tusculum University Pioneers. First pitch is scheduled for 2 P.M.
