Women’s Tennis Takes on Conference Carolina Roundup in Cayce

CAYCE, S.C. – In their first action of the 2023-24 academic year, the Converse University women's tennis team took 

The Valkyries first matchup in double Flight A was a 6-1 loss by sophomores Khushi Kharb and Lais Martins. Graduate student Tonya Glogowski-Watson and sophomore Sofia Giraldo-Jimenez competed in the same flight and captured a 6-4 victory in Friday's opening round and cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second round. The pair opened Saturday with a solid 6-2 win against their opponents from Belmont Abbey. The duo's run in Flight A ended in the finals with a 6-2 loss to a pair from Erskine.

Due to illness, Alexandra Romero competed with Chloe Smith from Emmanuel University. The duo, who were competing together for the first time ever, fell 6-1 in their opening round matchup.

Senior Natalie White and sophomore Anna Trace easily downed their opponent 6-1 in the opening round but fell 7-5 in the second round.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the Flight C doubles competition, juniors Brooke Benefield and Rebekka Braziel fell 6-2.

Kicking off Flight A in women's singles, Kharb fell 6-1 in the first set and fought hard in the second set but ultimately fell 7-6(12). Glogowski-Watson also competed in Flight A. She fell in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 4-10.

Trace opened singles play in Flight B with a 7-5 win in the first set but fell to her opponent from North Carolina Wesleyan in the next two sets 6-2, 10-3. Giraldo-Jimenez opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on Friday afternoon and followed with a three-set 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 on Friday evening. She added another three-set victory on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. Her run came to a close on Sunday morning with a three-set loss in the semifinals 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.

Romero fell in two sets in the same flight 6-3, 7-5. Martins rounded out Flight B for the Valkyries with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the opening round but fell 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.

In Flight C, Braziel fell in the first round 6-4, 6-1. Benefield fell likewise 7-6(3), 6-3. White fared better after receiving a first-round bye. After letting her opponent stay in the first set of the second round 6-4, White secured a 6-0 victory in the second set to advance to the quarterfinals. On Saturday afternoon, White's run finally ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to her opponent from Emmanuel University.

The Valkyries are back on the courts on Sept. 29 and 30 as they head to Florence as part of the Florence Invitational.
