SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team will conclude the regular season with a pair of road matches against Erskine and Emmanuel this Friday and Saturday afternoon.
The Converse University women's tennis team is 7-10 overall this season and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas play this year. The Valkyries will be looking to end a four-game losing streak dating back April 2
nd. This season, Converse is 4-4 in true road games with their last road win coming on March 25
th against Chowan University.
Maria Belen Vendrell and
Tonya Glogowski-Watson lead the tennis team in singles wins this season. Vendrell is 7-8 overall and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas action, playing at the No. 1 flight for the Valkyries this season. Vendrell is 6-4 over her last 10 matches and has won two straight matches heading into this weekend. Glogowski-Watson is 7-9 overall and 5-4 in conference action, playing primarily as the Valkyries No. 2 singles player.
Luiza Estrada and
Valentina Aparicio have also stepped up for the Valkyries this season. Estrada is 6-9 overall and has split time at both the No. 3 and No. 4 singles flights this year. Aparicio is 5-10 overall this season, but has seen action at primarily at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights in the Valkyries lineup.
In doubles action the Valkyries top tandem of Estrada and Glogowski-Watson are 6-9 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas play. The duo is an even 5-5 over their last 10 matches as they look to get back on the winning track this weekend.
The Valkyries first opponent this weekend will be at Erskine on Friday afternoon. The Flying Fleet are 8-9 overall and 6-3 in Conference action. Erskine has won three straight matches and they are 5-3 at home this season.
Erskine is led by their No. 1 singles player Emma Bentz, who boasts a 10-7 overall record and a 6-3 conference record. Bentz is 7-3 in her last 10-matches and has won the past two. Luize Valtere and Rupal Kharb both have eight wins at their respective flights this season. Kharb has won six straight matches at the No. 5 singles court.
In doubles action, the Flying Fleet's top pairing of Bentz and Valtere is 11-3 overall and 7-2 in Conference Carolina play. The top pairing has gone 8-2 over their last 10-matches and they are currently on a two-match winning streak. Erskine has not settled on a No. 2 doubles court, but the No. 3 doubles tandem of Czarina Aguirre and Kharb are 6-5 overall this season.
On Saturday afternoon, the Valkyries will make the trek over to the Peach State to battle Emmanuel in the regular season finale. Emmanuel is 6-14 overall and 5-3 in Conference Carolinas play this season. The Lions are 4-7 at home this year but they are currently on a two-match winning streak.
In singles action, the Lions are led by Soleny Gonzalez and Alejandra Guerrero. Both players have won 11-matches this season, with Gonzalez holding a perfect 5-0 record in Conference action. Gonzalez is also currently on a nine-match winning streak. In doubles action, the Lions No. 2 tandem of Gonzalez and Shatavisa Ghosh is 9-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play this season.
