SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse softball team will begin its 2022 season with a set of games against UVA Wise on Sunday, February 6 with the first pitch set to be thrown at 2:00 p.m. The second game against the Cavaliers will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Sunday: Converse (0-0, 0-0 Conference Carolinas) vs. UVA Wise (0-0, 0-0 South Atlantic Conference)
Location: Tyger River Stadium/Spartanburg, S.C.
Time: 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.

The Series:
This will be the first time that the Valkyries have competed against the Cavaliers.
 
Converse Notes:
This will be the first game for Converse of the season. It will also be their first game under the new coaching staff made up of Jackie Huff and Bonita Allen. Prior to Huff and Allen, the Valkyries finished the 2021 season with a 5-36 record, 2-18 Conference Carolinas.

  • Maggie Griffis: Freshman 1B/RHP from Graniteville, S.C.
  • Faith Hauser: Freshman utility from Lexington, N.C.

  • Reagan Owens: Junior RHP from Roanoke, Va.
  • Grace McKinney: Junior 3B/1B from Boiling Springs, S.C.

A Word from Coach Jackie Huff:
"The girls have been working really hard since I got here. It has obviously been a transition for them, but they have been very intentional. We have worked on changing our mindset and how successful we can be from our failures. I want to use our failures, whether that be a strikeout, a fielding error or a loss, as a way to bounce back and to reevaluate our mindsets. I want to use it as a way to see if we are learning from our mistakes and failures.

We're itching to get out on the field on Saturday since our three fall scrimmages got canceled. I just really hope that people see a different Converse softball team on the field this year. I'm very excited for the future of Valkyrie softball with Team 7 leading the way."
 
UVA Wise Notes:
This will also be UVA Wise's first game of the 2022 season. The Cavaliers are coached by Nick and Karen Bitter, each in their 10^th season at UVA Wise. UVA Wise finished the 2021 season with a 17-19-1 record, 12-12 South Atlantic Conference. Key returners for the Cavs are junior, RHP McKenna Falwell and Sarah Barrett in outfield. Falwell earned SAC preseason first-team honors while Barrett earned a spot on the SAC preseason second-team.
