Valkyries Dominate NGU, Deliver Poda First Conference Win

Tigerville, SC-  An object in motion stays in motion. This law of motion very much describes the way the match between Converse and North Greenville unfolded. On a hot Friday afternoon, the Valkyries got off to a hot start thanks to number 3 doubles pair of Valentina Aparicio and Anna Klasson. With the commanding 6-0 win, the shout of victory leaked over to the rest of the doubles. With a contentious beginning, Taylor Parrott and Tonya Glogowski-Watson won the final 4 games of the match to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the number 1 spot. Belen Vendrell and Marleen Prinz did not want to be left out of the victory party and held off a comeback attempt to win the third and final double match at the number 2 spot, 6-4.
This momentum did not stop. Klasson and Aparicio both enjoyed their shutout victory so much, that they took that mindset into the singles and each won 6-0 6-0 at the number 5 and 6 spots respectively. Glogowski-Watson and Prinz each also captured their first set 6-0 prior to rallying from behind in the second sets to each win 7-5, with Prinz clinching the victory for the Valkyries with Glogowski-Watson's win coming moments after.
With the match well in hand, the most tightly contested matches fell to Parrott and Vendrell, both of whom have battled hard fought wins and losses all season. Parrott took command late of each set, winning 6-4 7-5 at the number 3 spot. Parrott said of the match, "It was such an amazing feeling to be able to play with this team. We put in countless hours and to see it pay off with this win makes a huge difference. It felt amazing contributing to the 7-0 win today!" The result in itself was amazing, but the confidence exuded from Parrott as she stepped to the line with a chance to win was the real story. "There are people on the team that don't know how much extra work Taylor has put in. She has been out two extra times every week with me working on her game, by her request because she wants to be in this situation. You knew she was going to win the moment she stepped up to serve for the match," Coach Poda said of her win.
With Parrott having won, all eyes were once again on a familiar final match. Vendrell dropped the first set 6-1 and trailed 5-3 in the second set. With both teams, and even the NGU men's team, on standby bellowing support for their own, Vendrell burst through, saving match points en route to a win for the second time this season. Stealing all of the momentum at the end of the second set, Vendrell never looked back in dominating the third set as well. The Valkyries clinched their first conference win of the season with this 7-0 win.

The Valkyries return to action Sunday at 2 PM at Southern Wesleyan.
