Valkyries Blow Past Chowan 5-2 on Senior Day, Extend Win Streak to 5

Spartanburg, SC- Athletes were thrown for a loop with COVID issues at this time last year. The NCAA afforded athletes the opportunity to play an additional year to make up for this, and Converse's lone senior took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself. Over thirty people came out in support for Taylor Parrott as she played in her final home match, a vital contest between the Valkyries and Chowan. Through all the cheers and love, Converse pulled through with an important 5-2 win.
To start the scoring, Anna Klasson and Valentina Aparicio commanded a 6-3 win at number doubles. To the enjoyment of the crowd, the 1 and 2 doubles matches remained back and forth affairs. Belen Vendrell and Marleen Prinz clinched the doubles point for the Valkyries with a come from behind 6-4 victory, leaving center stage for the 1 pair of Tonya Glogowski-Watson and Parrott. With the lone senior serving to win the match, Taylor came up with great serve after great serve, finally arriving at match point. Parrott hit a beautiful serve that required a weak return, and Glogowski-Watson hopped on it and finished it, causing a roar from students, administrators, and family in the crowd.
With Converse leading 1-0, they made short work of singles action. Aparicio kicked things off with a dominant 6-0 6-1 victory, followed quickly by wins by Prinz and Klasson, winning 6-0 6-3 and 6-0 6-2, respectively, clinching the win for the Valkyries. Glogowski-Watson added to what has been a stellar sophomore campaign with a 6-3 6-2 win at the 2 slot.
With this win, Converse has set numerous firsts for the program. "First winning season, both overall and conference. First time clinching a top 5 seed at the tournament. There are several individual records these young ladies still have great chances to earn as well. It has been an incredible season, and we have one more to go tomorrow to wrap things up. Then our eyes are toward the tournament. We could not be prouder of the team, and especially Taylor for everything she has meant to our program in her time here," Coach Poda said of the day.
Converse has been cemented as the number 5 seed for the Conference Carolinas tournament, slated to begin April 23rd in Sumter, SC. Before then, the Valkyries will officially wrap up their regular season by hosting King tomorrow at 2 pm.
