Spartanburg, SC- Following the excitement and drama of last match's thrilling comeback, the Valkyries added a little bit of stress early, and unwound late. Playing their first home match since March 19, Converse opened up with excitement that briefly vanished as the Bulldogs struck first by winning the doubles with wins at number 1 and 3 doubles. Number 2 doubles pair, Belen Vendrell and
Marleen Prinz, wanted to make sure there was some momentum going into singles and closed the doubles with a 6-4 victory. It was the duos 8
th win of the season at number 2 doubles, setting a single season school record with the achievement.
That brief switch in momentum made the 1-0 deficit nonplus as the Valkyries quickly sprinted ahead in the singles. The scoring started with number 4 singles, as Prinz added to her win total with a 6-2 6-1 win, extending her own school record for wins at the position in a season. Not wanting to be left behind,
Tonya Glogowski-Watson played what was likely her best match of the year in a 6-2 6-2 dismantling at the number 2 spot. "Tonya could do whatever she wanted today. Attack, defend, stay neutral…everything was there. She was awesome. That win put us ahead in the match and we never looked back. I am so proud of her performance today," Coach Poda said of the match.
Anna Klasson wrapped up a clean 6-1 6-1 victory at the number 5 position, her 5
th consecutive win, to push the Valkyries to a 3-1 lead. Senior
Taylor Parrott clinched the win at number 3 singles. After trailing 3-0 in the first set, Parrott won 12 consecutive games to win 6-3 6-0, letting out a joyous scream and letting a smile overtake her as several teammates ran to celebrate with her. The scoring was not finished, however. Belen Vendrell rallied from deficits in both the first and second sets to win 6-4 6-3, stretching the lead to 5-1. The team gathered to watch
Valentina Aparicio as the last match once again, this time with the match well in hand, and cheered her on as she flew back from a 5-2 second set deficit to win at number 6 6-4 7-6 (6).
This marks the 2
nd time in the last 7 days that Converse has won all 6 singles matches of a contest and moves their conference win streak to 4. They host Chowan on senior day on Saturday, April 17 at 11 am.
