Spartanburg, S.C. - Converse and Limestone have played annually for over a decade. The former conference foes took the court today for the first time in awhile as non-conference opponents. Converse came out ready to play and took the Saints by storm in the opening minutes of the match. In what seems to be becoming a trend,
Belen Vendrell and
Marleen Prinz took the first match with a decisive 6-2 victory at number two doubles, their fourth win in five matches together, setting the tone for the rest of the doubles. Limestone would not sit back, however, as they responded quickly with a 6-2 win of their own over
Valentina Aparicio and
Anna Klasson at number three doubles. As these matches concluded, number one doubles were deadlocked at 3-3. In a tense game,
Taylor Parrott and
Tonya Glogowski-Watson held tough to take a 4-3 lead with a booming volley and a more powerful high five in celebration. That momentum carried them to rally off the final three games of the set, winning 6-3 and awarding Converse the doubles point.
The singles began quickly, and Limestone regrouped, taking both number five and six singles to take a 2-1 lead. With the match in the balance, Prinz added to her already impressive week with a 6-0 0-6 6-1 victory to knot the match at 2-2. The match was not without drama, with several comeback attempts being made by both teams. The Saints overcame a 4-1 second set deficit in order to win at the number two position, while Converse's Parrott was in the midst of a ferocious comeback of her own, trailing 5-0 in the second set and making a push to 5-4, prior to Limestone clinching that match and the win.
With the 5-2 loss, Converse has a lot to be proud of. The doubles pairs are quickly becoming problems for other teams to deal with, as the winning continues to pile up. This is a trend that Coach Poda believes will help the team turn the tide in these close losses, "The doubles are so big for the momentum of the game, and these ladies are doing an amazing job of being the more proactive players. They are in charge of the way the matches are played, even in points they lose. They are only going to continue to get better and the singles are close to turning that corner. We are going to be a dangerous team once they both come together."
The Valkyries next take the court at home on Friday, March 19 against Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel College. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at Sally Abney Rose Complex.
