Women's Tennis

Women's Tennis defeats Lander, for the first time in over 12 years, 4-3.

Box Score Greenwood, SC – One of the things Head Coach Alex Poda will tell you is, the Converse College Women's Tennis team has been slowly building itself into a team that not only constantly competes, but is one of the region's top teams.  The Valkyries looked to take another step towards that goal this afternoon, as they traveled to Greenwood, SC to face Peach Belt Conference member, Lander University.  Even though they are if different conferences, the two programs have faced each other many times over the years.

Converse earned their first win of the day when the pair of Maria Belen Vendrell and Marleen Prinz defeated their opponents 6-0, but the Bearcats came back as they defeated the doubles team of Valentina Aparicio and Anna Klasson, 1-6.  With both teams splitting the two matches, the team of Tonya Glogowski-Watson and Taylor Parrott needed to win to earn the doubles point for the Valkyries.  In a back and forth match, Glogowski-Watson and Parrot were able to come away with the win, 7-5.

In the singles matches, Taylor Parrott fell by a score of 2-6, 1-6, however Valentina Aparicio put Converse back in the win column, as she was victorious in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.  Anna Klasson earned the Valkyries another point by winning her match 6-4, 6-2, but Lander would earn a point of their own, as they defeated Marleen Prinz 3-6, 4-6.  Tonya Glogowski-Watson lost a hard fought 3-set battle, 7-5, 3-6, 1-6, but Maria Belen Vendrell clinched the overall win for Converse by winning her match 6-2, 7-5.

With the 4-3 win, the Valkyries earned their first win against the Bearcats in over 12 years.  Converse now moves to 2-0 on the season and will be back in action next Saturday, March 6th as they host Newberry College in a doubleheader.  In the meantime, Coach Poda and his team will enjoy today's milestone, as they continue to strive to meet their program goals.
