Box Score Hartsville, SC – After experiencing a number of weather cancellations, the Converse Softball team was finally able to get back on the field. On Friday, the Valkyries traveled to Hartsville, SC to face Coker University, in an afternoon doubleheader. It would be the first of 4 games this weekend for Converse, and they were glad that the weather would be on their side for these first 2 games.
In game one,
Reagan Owens took the mound for the Valkyries and held Coker scoreless in the 1
st inning. However, in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings, the Cobras were able to get on the scoreboard twice, to take a 2-0 lead. In the 5
th inning, Owens would get some support, as
Allison Plafcan drove in
Abbigale Outlaw for Converse's first run of the game. Next,
Brooklyn McElrath came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring
Ellie Stout, to tie the game at 2-2. In their half of the 5
th, Coker retook the lead at, 3-2. The Valkyries were unable to score in the top of the 6
th inning and the Cobras took advantage, by scoring another 3 runs, to push their lead to 4.
Ryan Finazzo drove in
Allison Plafcan in the top of the 7
th, but that is all the offense they could get, as Coker would come away with the win, 8-4.
Game two saw the Cobra's bats come alive, but Converse was not able to match it offensively. The Valkyries had a few scoring opportunities, but Coker's pitching successfully got out of any jams they put themselves in. Converse would counter by rotating their pitching staff to try to slow down the Cobras' bats. However, it would not be enough as the Valkyries fell, by a score of 8-0.
Converse will head back to Spartanburg and have a day to prepare for their 2
nd doubleheader of the weekend on Sunday, as they welcome in UNC-Pembroke to Tyger River Park. Game one will begin at 1:00pm, followed by game two at approximately 3:00pm. Both games will be live streamed on the Conference Carolinas Digital Network at
