Softball Drops Pair of Shortened Games to North Greenville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Converse (6-34, 1-9 CC) softball team dropped a pair of shortened games at North Greenville (20-17, 11-3 CC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders were able to down the Valkyries by finals of 9-1 and 8-0.

GAME ONE: CONVERSE 1, NGU 9 (5 INNINGS)

Converse went dry in the top of the first and North Greenville took an early 3-0 advantage after posting a trio of runs in the home half of the first inning, the big hit coming off of a double to left center by K. Collins.

A scoreless second and third inning by the Valkyries allowed North Greenville to blow the game open with a six-run bottom of the third. During the at-bat, NGU collected six runs on six hits to push out to a 9-0 lead heading to the fourth.

The Valkyries finally got on the board in the top of the fourth. Hailey Spitler led the frame off with a triple down the left field line. However, it looked as though the Crusaders would escape the jam after picking Spitler off the bases as she was caught stealing.

Converse came right back A Jenna Baro followed by a Gabrille Cuevas double center put runners at first and second with two outs. That set up Meredith Quarles' RBI single to left center to close the gap to 9-1. Unfortunately, that would be the only run Converse would score, falling by that same score in 5.0 innings.

GAME TWO: CONVERSE 0, NGU 8 (6 INNINGS)

Game two was a defensive battle as neither team could gain an advantage over the other. The two squads combined for three hits over the game's initial four and a half innings of play. That changed in the bottom of the fifth as North Greenville broke the game open with five runs on four hits and one defensive miscue.

Converse was held scoreless in the top of the sixth and the Crusaders scored three times with just one out in the bottom of the frame to enforce the run-rule, defeating the Vals by the final of 8-0.

Converse will be back in action on Friday, April 5, traveling to Central, S.C. to take on the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
