Softball Ends Season With Two Losses at Lees McRae

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Converse College (6-44, 1-19 CC) softball team finished the regular season with a pair of losses to Lees-McRae (17-17, 10-10 CC) on Thursday afternoon at the LMC Softball Field.

GAME ONE: CONVERSE 0, LEES-MCRAE 8 (5 Innings)

After a scoreless first inning, Lees-McRae blew the game wide open with eight runs in the bottom of the second frame. The Bobcats scored eight times on eight hits, including a solo homerun by Emily Merriam to get the scoring initiated.

During the course of the game Converse managed only three base runners, none of which moved farther than first base. The Valkyries defense was solid the remainder of the game, but it was not enough as the mercy rule was enforced with LMC taking game one by the final of 8-0 in 5.0 innings.

GAME TWO: CONVERSE 2, LEES-MCRAE 5

Game two started just as the first as Converse was unable to plate a run in the first inning. However, Lees-McRae used a big bottom of the first to take the advantage after scoring four runs, the big blow coming off back-to-back doubles from Faith Cooke and Kara Cunningham.

The Bobcats added a single run in the bottom of the third to push ahead 5-0. Converse finally got on the board in the top of the fourth. Allison Plafcan led the frame off with a single before Brooklyn McElrath connected on her first collegiate homerun, a two-run blast to left field.

However, that would be the last run scored for either team as Lees-McRae took game two by the final of 5-2, earning the Conference Carolinas sweep.
