Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Converse (3-10, 1-6 CC) came up on the losing end of a low-scoring affair versus Chowan (6-8, 4-4 CC) on Sunday afternoon at Fulp Field. The Hawks outscored Converse 7-6 in the first half before registering a 3-2 advantage in the second half to pull out the 10-8 win over the Purple and Gold.
Sabrina Isch put Chowan ahead 1-0 with a goal early on, but Brittni Jones continued her terrific season with back-to-back goals to give Converse its first lead (2-1) with 23:20 to play in the opening period. Sharlize Burgos and Katherine Goldfuss extended that lead to 4-1 with goals of their own before Alexandria Hammonds cut the deficit in half with a free postion goal for Chowan.
Following a score by Ashlei Alston Chowan connected on two straight goals to pull to within one point (5-4), but Burgos tacked on her second goal of the contest to reestablish a two-goal advantage for the Valkyries with 6:24 before halftime. However, a 3-0 run by the Hawks sent the teams to the intermission with Chowan leading 7-6.
That advantage ballooned to 9-6 as Chowan posted the first two goals of the second half, but Burgos contributed her third netter of the contest to trim the Hawks lead to 9-7 with 11:21 remaining on the clock. However, offense was at a premium the remainder of the half as Chowan posted a score with 41 ticks left before Flore Samsi took a draw control all the way and netted her fifth goal of the season to make the final tally 10-8 in favor of the Hawks.
Converse led the Hawks 24-20 with shots, but both teams registered 15 shots on goal each. Groundballs went in favor of CU, 22-21, while Converse had 15 turnovers to Chowan's 20. The Valkyries were 4-of-11 on free position shots and Chowan finished 4-of-6 in the same category. Burgos led the Purple and Gold with a hat trick, while Jones contributed two goals.
Converse will step out of conference on Friday, April 13 as it plays host to Young Harris College. The first draw control is scheduled for 3 p.m.
