Strong Start Not Enough As Converse Falls To Mount Olive

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (3-8, 1-5 CC) lacrosse team started off very strong against Mount Olive (10-3, 7-0 CC), collecting the game's first three goals, but could not hold down the high-powered Trojan offense, dropping a Conference Carolinas contest, 24-4, on Saturday evening at Fulp Field.

The Valkyries came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a quick 3-0 advantage 10 minutes into the opening period. Flore Samsi got the scoring started with a free position goal at the 27:31 mark before Sharlize Burgos added a goal of her own off the free position four minutes later. Ashlei Alston found the back of the cage with 21:51 to put the Purple and Gold ahead by the three scores.

However, Mount Olive went on a massive scoring run, connecting on 16 unanswered goals over the final 20-plus minutes of the first half to send the teams into the locker room with the Trojans leading 16-3. That advantage extended to 20-0 before a free shot goal by Alston cut the deficit to 20-4 with 20 minutes to play in the contest.

Mount Olive scored the last four goals of the game and walked away with a 24-4 victory. Alston led Converse with a pair of scores, while Samsi added a team-high six groundballs. UMO took 35 shots to the Valkyries 11 and won the grounder battle, 2013. Caitlin Johnson collected eight saves in goal.

Converse will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, stepping out of conference to host Montevallo. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
