Box Score 2 CENTRAL, S.C.- Converse softball dropped a pair of Conference Carolinas contests to Southern Wesleyan, 8-7 and 10-2 (5) on Saturday afternoon. The Valkyries drop to 6-20 on the season and 1-11 in league play. SWU improves to 16-18 and 5-7.
Shelby Bullock (Horseshoe Beach, Fla.) and Maddison Lukens (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Valkyries picking up four hits apiece. Bri Putnam (Chesnee, S.C.) recorded three hits going 2-2 in the nightcap. Makaylah Plemmons (Union County, S.C.) recorded three RBI and two walks to go with her 2-2 at the plate in game one.
Converse registered 20 hits in the doubleheader and left 18 on base.
The Valkyries will face Lenoir-Rhyne tomorrow, April 3. First Pitch is at 2pm.
Game One: Converse 7, Southern Wesleyan 8
Converse started off the game with a Maddy Lukens double on the second pitch of the game. Tristan Harvey was hit by a pitch followed by a Kelsie Land single to left field loaded the bases. A fly ball to left field ended the rally as the runner tagging from third was out at the plate.
Southern Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead 2-0.
The Valkyries responded with five runs of their own off five hits. Bri Putnam started off the inning with a single left center. Mckayla Davis (Concord, N.C.) doubled to left center followed by Makaylah Plemmons doubled down the line to knot things at 2-all. Maddy Lukens singled and stole second to put runners in scoring position.
Shelby Bullock doubled to left center to bring in Plemmons and Lukens. Back-to-back walks and a wild pitch allowed Bullock to score to push the lead out to 5-2.
SWU countered in the bottom of the inning with a four run frame to retake the lead at 6-5.
Converse would knot things up at six in the top of the third inning. Mckayla Davis singled to left followed by a Makaylah Plemmons walk and a Maddy Lukens single to center netted the tying run. A Tristan Harvey walk would load the bases for the Valkyries but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the rally.
The Warriors would push across two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo shot and three base hits to take an 8-6 lead.
Converse would get a run back in the top of the sixth on a Makaylah Plemmons single up the middle but left two stranded in the inning. The Valkyries were unable to tie things up in the top of the seventh.
Game Two: Converse 2, Southern Wesleyan 10 (Five Innings)
Southern Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on three hits to take an early 1-0 lead.
Converse bounced back to take the lead in the top of the third inning. Maddy Lukens started off the inning with a single and moved to second on the stolen base. A Shelby Bullock single to right and a stolen base moved runners into scoring position. A throwing miscue and a ground out leads to the Valkyries' 2- advantage.
The Warriors would counter with three runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take the night cap 10-2 in five innings. Converse posted eight hits in the loss.
