Box Score FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- Six different Valkyries scored as Converse completed the comeback to defeat Emmanuel 12-11 in the Conference Carolinas lacrosse opener on a blistering and snowy Tuesday evening.
Converse (1-0, 1-0) featured two Valkyries recording hat-tricks with Brittni Jones (Lees Summitt, Mo.) notching four goals and an assist. Laura Starkes (Whitby, Ontario) scored three goals. Chelsea Worrell (Orlando, Fla.) found the back of the net twice.
Emmanuel (0-1, 0-1) started off the contest with three goals in the first six minutes before Worrell netted the first goal for the Valkyries. The Lions countered scoring two more goals to push their lead to 5-1.
The Valkyries would rebound posting three goals to bring it to within one. Jessi Walters (Fort Mill, S.C.) found the back of the net on a free position attempt with a man down. Worrell netted her second goal of the contest on a free position. B. Jones would score her first of the season off the feed from Aubrie Lauderdale (Greenville, S.C.).
Converse and Emmanuel traded goals to end the first half as the Lions took a 6-5 lead into the break. Laura Starkes finished the half with a goal for the Valkyries.
Emmanuel would score two goals in a thirty second span to push the Lion advantage to a three goal lead. Converse would fight back going on a 4-1 run to knot things at 9-all. Kasey Halodik (Waxhaw, N.C.) would grab the ground ball and go on the break to find the back of the net for an unassisted goal. Starkes tied things at nine getting the feed from Maria Knott (Ball Ground, Ga.).
The Lions would take the lead with just under eight minutes scoring an unassisted goal, 10-9.
Two goals from Brittni Jones and a goal from Laura Starkes would give the Valkyries the cushion it needed to complete the comeback as Emmanuel tried to rally. Emmanuel scored with 86 seconds left but the Valkyries defense kept Emmanuel from tying things.
Sandra Ponce (Germantown, Md.) picked up the win in cage to move to 1-0 on the season.
Head Coach Lindsey Coon starts her coaching career with a win. Converse has opened the Conference Carolinas schedule with three straight victories over Emmanuel.
Converse hosts #12 Mount Olive February 13 at Fulp Field for the home opener. First draw is at 4pm.
