Box Score 2 BREVARD, N.C.- The Converse softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Brevard, 4-1 and 7-2.
Converse (2-6) was led offensively by Maddison Lukens (Chandler, Ariz.) going 3-7 with two runs scored. Tristan Harvey (Anacoco, La.) and Makaylah Plemmons (Union County, S.C.) tallied two hits.
The Valkyries travel to USC Aiken on Sunday, February 21 for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1pm.
Game One: Converse 1, Brevard 4
Converse played from behind early with Brevard (5-5) jumping out to an early 3-0 run in the bottom half of the first inning. The Valkyries allowed all three runs on miscues. Brevard scored on a wild pitch and two runs on a dropped pop-up.
Brevard scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to lead 4-0 with a RBI single to left center.
Maddie Lukens picked up the Valkyries' first hit of the contest in the top of the fourth on an infield bunt single. Lukens would get stranded at second after the stolen base.
Converse would get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Bri Putnam (Chesnee, S.C.) started off the inning with a single to left center. Putnam would advance into scoring position on the wild pitch and move to third on the groundout. Anna Bennett (Fulton, Md.) brought in the run reaching on the fielding error to allow Putnam to score.
Marissa Steadman (Roebuck, S.C.) would get tagged for the loss despite allowing one earned run. Maddie Lukens, Tristan Harvey, Makaylah Plemmons and Bri Putnam recorded hits for the Valkyries. Savanna Fain (Inman, S.C.) drew a walk.
Game Two: Converse 2, Brevard 7
Brevard took the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring two runs on a Valkyrie throwing miscue.
Converse would get on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Maddie Lukens doubled to right field to start the inning. Lukens would come around to score after Savanna Fain reached on a throwing error.
The Valkyries would tie things up at 2-all in the top of the sixth inning. Lukens started off the inning with a bunt single. Moving on the pitch, Lukens moved over to third on the sacrifice bunt by Fain. Anna Bennett would score Lukens with a RBI sac fly to center field.
Brevard added five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to lead 7-2. Converse would load the bases in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't push across runs.
Marissa Steadman took the loss in game two allowing five runs off five hits. Morgan Marlow (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) pitched 4.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Maddie Lukens picked up two hits in the loss. Shelby Bullock (Horseshoe Beach, Fla.) increased her batting average to .350 with a hit in game two. Bullock, Tristan Harvey, Kelsie Land (Keller, Texas), Mak Plemmons, and Morgan Marlow tallied a hit in the loss.
