Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Valkyries Lacrosse team traveled to Mount Olive this afternoon for the first round of the Conference Carolina tournament. Converse was the sixth seed while the Trojans were ranked third going into playoffs. The Valkyries put up a fight but were unable to hold on to tournament hope, dropping to the Trojans 8-15.
For Mount Olive, leading in offense was Michelle Fortier with five goals; behind her was teammate Candace Corkin with four goals. Other Trojans to score include Michelle Scannell with two, Katie McGovern, Riann Daziel, Heather Cockburn, and Kali Cook-Grisewood each with one goal. Leading in defense was Ashlyn Altieri with five ground balls, while teammate Michelle Fortier led in draw controls with six. Goalkeeper Hannah Knight spent fifty-three minutes in the goal, getting the win, and allowing six goals with five saves. Sarah Snell spent six minutes in the goal allowing two goals with two saves.
Converse and Mount Olive were tied with ground balls per period, each with thirteen. Mount Olive dominated in draw controls with seventeen, while Converse only picked up seven for the day.
For the Valkyries, Amelia Helm and Emma Murphy led the offense, both putting away three goals. Teammates Jordy Taylor and Laura Strakes each contributed one goal. Leading the defense was Jordy Taylor, picking up four ground balls. Goalkeeper Alex Gurecki spent all sixty minutes in the goal allowing fifteen goals with seven saves.
The Valkyries finished their 2014 season 7-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
