SPARTANBURG, SC- Olivia Self posted two extra set wins in singles and doubles competition, but it would not be enough to slow down Carson-Newman, as the Valkyries fall in regional action, 2-7. The Eagles pick up their second win of the season, while the purple and gold are still looking for their first win at 0-7.
The Valkyries would go one of three in doubles competition, routing a tiebreaker victory at #1 doubles behind the team of Self and Kasey Anderson, 9-8. The teams would trade volleys when a crucial Self backhand to the corner forced an off-balance shot from Carson-Newman that Anderson spiked down to claim the tiebreaker, 7-5. Anderson and Self are a team combined best 3-4 in 2012-2013.
Self battled back at #1 singles from a second set loss to force a decisive third set following a 6-1 first set victory. The Eagles' Stefy Stand would stay even with Self throughout the set, but a couple netted volleys allowed Self to break away en route to the 10-6 match victory. Desiree Kittel and Marrisa Esformes each posted competitive matches but would respectively fall in two sets.
Converse returns home Friday with a chance to notch a win in the conference column, playing host the Saints of Limestone College. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
