Spartanburg, SC-- Sam Crowder's only goal saved Converse from a near shut-out by 10th ranked Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon. Belmont Abbey's tenured program edged-out Converse in every facet of play and controlled most of the game. The Crusaders out-shot Converse 39-5 and held the edge in groundballs (18-6). Belmont also controlled more draws (18-6). The Valkyries fall to 0-4 on the season (0-2 conference) while Belmont improves to 5-2 overall (1-2 league).
For the Valkyries, Lisa Ryan grabbed 2 groundballs and controlled 1 draw. Jamie Mobley added 2 more draw controls and Carrie Jackson managed one shot-on-goal and 1 draw control. Goalie Ashley Mercuri saved 11 shots-on-goal.
Belmont's Laurie Jordan led with 4 goals (4-6 shooting), 3 groundballs, and 3 draw controls. Theresa Nolan picked up 5 groundballs and controlled and impressive 4 draws. Emily Hudgins added 3 goals of 4 shots and controlled 2 draws.
Converse plays one more home this month on March 17th against Pfeiffer at 4:00pm. They take the field again on Thursday, March 12 at Erskine.
