Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. – Behind near-sweep of singles play and victories on two doubles courts, the Converse University men's tennis team (1-1) opened up their spring season by defeating the Mars Hill Lions (0-3) by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Leopold Morel and sophomore Marty Letessier kicked off the afternoon with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Stanley Waters and freshman Ben Hyde-Smith secured the double's point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.

Waters kept the good times rolling as he secured the first single's point of the spring semester for Converse with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. Hyde-Smith picked up his victory at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-2, putting the Valkyries just one point away from securing the match.

That point was secured by Letessier at No. 3 singles, winning 6-4 in consecutive sets.

Morel and freshman Takuma Furumaki both won their matches in three sets. Morel dropped set one 6-3, but rebounded to win set two 7-6 (6) and cruised to a 6-1 victory in set three, claiming No. 5 singles for the Valkyries. Furumaki claimed set one 6-4 but narrowly lost set two 7-5. With his match at No. 2 singles on the line, the Valkyries' freshman claimed a 10-5 victory.

Converse returns to the court on Friday, February 9 as they head down the street to take on the Division I Wofford Terriers at 4 P.M.
