SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University tennis teams are headed to the Queen City tomorrow afternoon to play Belmont Abbey at 1:00 p.m.
This will be the 13
th meeting between the Converse women's team and the Belmont Abbey women's team dating back to the 2011 season. The Crusaders hold an 8-4 record against the Valkyries and have won the past seven matches against Converse. A win for Converse on Saturday would be their first since the 2014-15 season.
This will be the second meeting between the Converse men's tennis team and the Belmont Abbey men's team. Last season, the Crusaders out lasted the Valkyries in a six-hour match that saw Belmont Abbey come away with a 4-3 win.
Converse Women's Notes:
- Converse is 4-12 overall this season and 1-5 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are coming off a 6-1 win over King on Wednesday afternoon.
- Last time out the Valkyries swept the doubles point against the Crusaders and then due to forfeit, won three out of the top four singles matches. Tonya Glogowski-Watson, Khushi Kharb and Lais Martin all picked up wins for the Valkyries against King.
- Kharb leads the women's team with a 9-5 record in singles action, while Lais Martins is second on the team with a 5-10 record.
- The Valkyries No. 1 doubles team of Glogowski-Watson/Kharb are 11-5 overall this season and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries No. 2 pairing of Martins/ Marleen Prinz is 4-4 overall on the season.
Converse Men's Notes:
- The Converse men's team is 5-11 overall and 3-3 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries are coming off a 6-1 win against King on Wednesday afternoon.
- The Valkyries began the match by sweeping the doubles point against King and then proceeded to pickup singles wins from Enzo Marcheschi, Marty Letessier, Leopold Morel, Cameron Davies and Parker Davis. For Davis his straight sets win at No. 6 singles was his first collegiate tennis win.
- Morel is 11-5 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Morel has won three straight in singles play and is 7-3 overall in his last 10 matches. Letessier is second on the team with a 7-7 overall record and a 5-1 conference record. Letessier has won six straight matches and seven of his last 10 matches.
- In doubles action, the Valkyries tandem of Letessier/Morel is 9-5 overall and 5-1 in conference action. The Valkyries top duo of Merlin Bellet/Marcheschi is 6-8 overall this season for Converse.
Belmont Abbey Women's Notes:
- The Belmont Abbey women's team is 13-9 overall and 4-3 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The Crusaders are 6-3 at home and have won two straight matchups against North Greenville and Emmanuel.
- Despite losing the doubles point, the Crusaders won five of six singles courts to take the match away from the Lions.
- Alexis Burkhalter leads the team with a 12-5 record, Frankee Hendricks is second on the team with a 10-6 record and four others have at least seven wins on the season.
- In doubles action the pairing of Kaitlin Nguyen/Elizabeth Vollmin leads the team with a 5-6 record playing mainly at the No. 1doubles court. The Crusaders have three other pairings that each have four wins on the season.
Belmont Abbey Men's Notes:
- The Belmont Abbey men's team is 14-19 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas actions this season. The Crusaders are 7-7 at home this season and they have won their last two matchups against North Greenville and Emmanuel.
- Belmont Abbey claimed the doubles point after winning a tiebreak at the No. 1 doubles court. The Crusaders clinched the match with wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles courts.
- Alex Turner leads the Crusaders with a 9-6 overall record while three other players are tied for second on the team with six wins each.
- The doubles pairing of Xaveam Van Wijk /Turner is 6-3 on the season, while two other pairings are tied for second on the team with five wins each.
