SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team will battle Mount Olive on Friday morning in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Championships tournament in Florence, S.C.
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Converse and Mount Olive dating back to last season. Mount Olive is 3-0 against the Valkyries and eliminated Converse in the quarterfinals round of the Conference Carolinas Championships a season ago. Earlier this season the Valkyries lost to Mount Olive 6-1 in pickle town.
Converse Notes:
- Converse is 6-13 overall this season and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are coming off a 4-2 loss to Barton on Sunday afternoon.
- In the Valkyries last match, Converse took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 doubles court and at the No. 3 doubles flight. Paul Berrouet was the only singles player to win his singles match against the Bulldogs.
- Leopold Morel leads the team with an 12-6 mark in singles this season, while Marty Letessier is second on the team with a 7-9 overall record and both players have a 5-3 mark in Conference Carolinas action. Merlin Bellet is third on the team with a 5-11 record at the No. 1 singles court.
- The Valkyries No. 2 doubles pairing of Morel/Letessier is 11-6 overall and 7-2 in conference action. The Valkyries top pairing of Bellet/Marcheschi is 8-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play this season.
Mount Olive Notes:
- Mount Olive is 10-9 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas play this season. The Trojans are 2-1 this season in neutral site games and they have lost two straight matchups.
- Mount Olive is coming off a 5-2 loss to Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon. Despite winning the No. 1 doubles flight in a tiebreaker, the Trojans lost the doubles point to the Lions. In singles action, Daniel Hammond and Bram Poel both picked up wins at their respective flights.
- Poel leads the team in singles action with an 11-5 overall record and 5-2 record in conference play. Hammond is second on the team with 10-4 overall record and Kabir Chhabria is third on the team with an 8-5 overall record.
- In doubles action the top pairing of Hammond and G. Zotin de Oliveira are 11-3 overall and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The No. 2 pairing of Elios Briand and Poel are 9-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
