Men’s Tennis Weekend Preview: Barton & Chowan

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team will host Barton and Chowan this weekend in their final regular season matches of the season.
 
This will be just the second meeting ever between Converse and both Barton and Chowan. Last season, Barton defeated the Valkyries 5-2, while Converse got the better of Chowan with a 6-1 road win over the Hawks.
 
 
Converse Notes:
  • Converse is 5-12 overall this season and 3-4 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries have been off for over a week, but last time out they lost to Belmont Abbey 7-0.
  • In the Valkyries last match, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Merlin Bellet/Enzo Marcheschi was the lone bright spot with a 7-5 win.  
  • Leopold Morel leads the team with an 11-6 mark in singles this season, while Marty Letessier is second on the team with a 7-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Conference Carolinas action. Merlin Bellet is third on the team with a 5-10 record at the No. 1 singles court.
  • The Valkyries No. 2 doubles pairing of Morel/Letessier is 9-6 overall and 5-2 in conference action. The Valkyries top pairing of Bellet/Marcheschi is 7-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play this season.
 
Barton Notes:
  • Barton is 8-8 overall and 5-1 in Conference Carolinas play this season. The Bulldogs are 3-1 in road matches and have won four straight games.
  • Last time out, the Bulldogs edged out Emmanuel 4-3. Barton began the match by sweeping the doubles point and took an early 2-0 lead following a straight sets win at the No. 5 singles court. Four out of the six singles matches went to three sets, with the Bulldogs pulling out a pair of wins at the No. 4 and No. 2 singles courts.
  • Deni Furtado Brlenic and Busquets Brau both lead the team with nine wins each in singles play. Johan Holgersson and Felipe Mioch are both tied for second on the team with eight wins each.
  • In doubles action, the tandem of Busquets Brau/Philip Nordberg is 7-2 overall this season playing mostly at the No. 2 doubles court. The top pairing of Holgersson/Wilhelm Karlsson is 5-2 overall and 4-1 in Conference action this season.
 
Chowan Notes:
  • Chowan is 2-15 overall and 1-5 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The Hawks are 1-3 in away matches this season and they have lost three straight matches.
  • The Hawks are coming off a 6-1 loss to Emmanuel on Tuesday afternoon. Chowan was swept in the doubles portion of the match and fell down early 1-0. The Hawks only win on the afternoon came at the No. 5 singles court, with a straight sets win from Michael Correa.  
  • Alvaro Juscamaita leads the team with a 7-9 overall record, Nikola Cvetanovic is second on the team with a 6-11 record and Santino Jose Sormani is third on the team with a 5-12 overall record.
  • The doubles action, the pairing of Cvetanovic/Sormani is 6-6 overall this season. No other doubles pairing has a winning record for Chowan.
