Men’s Tennis Travels to Furman on Saturday Morning

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team is headed over to Greenville, S.C. for their second Division I matchup of the year when they face Furman Paladins at 10:00 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
 
This will be the first ever meeting between Converse and Furman.  
 
Converse Notes:
  • Converse is 3-7 overall this season and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are coming off a 5-2 win over North Greenville last Saturday afternoon.
  • Last time out the Valkyries picked up the doubles point, with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts. In singles action, the men clinched the match with wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots.
  • Merlin Bellet earned Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honors for the fifth time in his career last week. Bellet won in straight sets at the No. 1 singles court and won at the No. 1 doubles court to help the Valkyries to their first conference win of the season.
  • Morel leads the team this season with a 7-3 record in singles play and he is 6-0 at the No. 6 singles flight this season. Bellet is second on the team with a 4-4 record at the No. 1 singles position and Enzo Marcheschi is third on the team with a 3-6 record playing primarily at the No. 3 singles court.
  • The Valkyries No. 3 doubles tandem of Marty Letessier/Leopold Morel are 5-3 overall this season and 4-1 at the No. 3 doubles flight. The Valkyries top doubles team of Bellet/Marcheschi is 4-4 overall this season and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action.
 
Furman Notes:
  • Furman is 4-10 overall this season and they are currently on a five-game losing streak. The Paladins are 0-7 on the road this season and 4-3 in home games played at the Mickel Tennis Center.
  • The Paladins are coming off a 5-1 loss to UT Arlington. Furman's only win in doubles action came at the No. 3 flight, when the tandem of Ben Cahill and Alex Han defeated their opponent 6-1. In singles action, the Paladins top player Jerry Barton won 7-6 (6-4), 6-4 over his opponent to give Furman their lone point of the match.
  • Cole Burnam leads the team with five wins in singles play, Thomas Kennedy is second on the team with four wins and Elijah Poritzky is third on the team with three wins.
  • In doubles action the pairing of Barton/Poritzky is 8-4 overall and 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles flight. The top pairing of Burnam/Kennedy is 6-7 this season with all six wins coming at the No.1 doubles court.
