SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University tennis teams will take their longest road trip of the season this weekend when they visit Chowan on Friday afternoon and Barton on Saturday.
Last weekend both the men's and women's teams opened up Conference Carolinas play with a win over King University. The men's team defeated the Tornado 6-1, while the women's team edged out King by a final score of 4-3.
In doubles action this season the women's top tandem of Tonya Gologowski-Watson and
Luiza Estrada have gone 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries No. 2 doubles team of
Marleen Prinz and
Maria Belen Vendrell has a pair of wins on the season. The Valkyries No. 3 doubles team made up of
Valentina Aparicio and
Brooke Benefield picked up their first win of the season last weekend at King.
In singles action
Marleen Prinz leads the team with a trio of wins on the season, Aparicio, Estrada, Glogowski-Watson and Vendrell have all recorded a pair of wins on the year at their respective flights.
On the men's side, the Valkyries top doubles duo of
Louka Queguiner and
Leopold Morel are 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Converse has attempted a lot of different pairings at the No. 2 doubles court but has finally found a match with the team of
Paul Berrouet and
Merlin Bellet. The duo is currently 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Conference action after last weekends win against King.
In singles action, Bellet has emerged as the top option in the Valkyries lineup. The freshman is 6-2 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. Berrouet and Queguiner are close behind Bellet with four wins each at their respective flight in the lineup.
Cameron Davies will look to pickup his fourth win this weekend at the No. 6 singles court.
The Chowan women's tennis team is 1-4 overall this season and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The Hawks are coming off a 7-0 loss to Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks No. 1 doubles team of Sreshta Puducheri and Micayah Porter are 2-3 on the season, while the No. 2 team of Valentina Domenicone and Asuntha Fleming are 4-1. In singles action, Fleming is the only player with a winning record.
The Chowan men's team is 2-4 overall on the season and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Hawks are coming off a 7-0 win over Virginia State on Tuesday afternoon. Chowan's top tandem in doubles is 2-3 on the season, while their No. 2 and No. 3 teams have each won two matches as well. In singles action, Santino Jose Sormani has set himself apart at the No. 2 court with a 5-0 record. The Hawks No. 1 singles player, Aser Shaaban is the only other player with a non losing record at 3-3.
The Barton women's team is 3-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs have lost five straight matches dating back to March 6
th against West Virginia Wesleyan. Barton is coming off a 7-0 loss to Division I foe Campbell on Tuesday afternoon. In singles action, the Bulldogs have a strong middle lineup with Tilde Howeler leading the way with a 6-3 record at the No. 3 court. Silvia Fernandez-Trabadelo is 5-2 overall at the No. 4 singles court and Maren Kronsbein is 4-4 at the No. 2 singles court. In doubles action the Bulldogs have yet to settle on a doubles pairing that has winning record.
The Barton men's tennis team is 8-5 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play. The Bulldogs have won six straight matches dating back to February 19
th against North Carolina Wesleyan. Barton is coming off a 6-1 win over Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs will also face Belmont Abbey this weekend. In doubles action the No. 2 tandem of Diego Agudelo and Philip Nordberg are 7-2 overall this season and they have won four straight matches. In singles action Kristoffer Staahlbrand is the Bulldogs top option with a 5-3 overall record at the No. 1 singles court. Philip Nordberg, Hannes Tylehed and Johan Holgersson are all tied for second on the team with 4 total wins in their respective flights.
