Tennis Teams Open Up Conference Carolinas Action at King

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time in two weeks the Converse University tennis program will compete in a match with a road trip to King University on Saturday afternoon.

This weekend's match against King will kickoff a three-game road trip for the Valkyries tennis program. Next week the Valkyries will make the long trek over to Chowan and Barton for a pair of matches.

The women's tennis team is 3-5 overall this season and they will be facing a 2-3 King squad. The Valkyries are coming off a 7-2 win over USC Sumter on February 26th, while King has not won a match since the fall semester. Tonya Glogowski-Watson, Marleen Prinz and Maria Belen Vendrell have provided leadership at the top of the singles lineup this season. In doubles action the tandem of Prinz and Vendrell have the best record so far this season at the No. 2 flight.

For King the women's team is led by Deniz Aytun and Mishka Koricinova in singles action this season. Both players have amassed a 3-2 overall record at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights this season. In doubles action this season the Tornado have struggled winning just one match at each court this year.

Looking over at the men's matchup, the Valkyries come into Saturday's match with a 4-5 overall record and an even 3-3 road record on the season. King is 3-3 overall and has not won a match since the fall season against Emory & Henry. Merlin Bellet leads the Valkyries with a 5-2 overall record in the No. 1 singles court, while Paul Berrouet is second on the team with a 3-3 record at the No. 5 court. In doubles action, the Valkyries best tandem this season has been Gregoire Legrand and Cameron Davies with a 2-2 record.

Meanwhile, the King men's tennis team has five players with at least three wins in singles competition. Mat Vieira leads the team with a 4-2 overall record playing at the No. 4 and No. 5 courts, while Alex Sodre, Rhys Halcrow, Kyle Robinson and Pedro Laydner all have a trio of wins on the season. In doubles action the tandem of Halcrow and Laydner are a perfect 3-0 and the No. 2 doubles court.
