Concorde, NC – Even though the Converse Women's Cross Country team did not have the full season they had hoped for, they were ready and determined to participate in today's Conference Carolina's Cross Country Championships. In their Meet in the fall, they proved they could compete with any of their fellow conference members and they were looking forward to proving that again this afternoon. It was a chilly day in Concorde, but that didn't stop the Valkyries from turning in one of their best finishes in the Conference Championships since 2014.
Freshman,
Bayley Robinson, set the pace for Converse, with an average mile of 6:45.2, finishing with an overall time of 21:00.3, in the 5K. Her performance was good enough for 7
th place, being just 4 seconds behind the 6
th place finisher. Coming in right behind Robinson was Junior
Caroline Felkel who finished 8
th, with an average mile of 6:46.0 and an overall time of 21:02.7. Rounding out the top 10 was Sophomore
Piper Grant, with an average mile of 6:47.2 and an overall time of 21:06.5. Rounding out the other impressive Valkyries' finishes were Freshmen
Emorie Thrasher at 28
th and
Libby Harvey at 35
th. They were followed by Sophomore
Jetta Turner, who came in 49
th place.
As a team, Converse would finish 4
th overall in the Championships. This finish was the best for the program in the Conference Carolinas Championships in 7 years. "I am extremely proud of this group of young ladies", said Head Coach
Mark Rennix. "The perseverance they have demonstrated this season and the pride they showed today was incredible. They were given the opportunity and took full advantage of it". With their top ten finishes,
Bayley Robinson was named First Team All-Conference, while
Caroline Felkel and
Piper Grant were selected Second Team All-Conference.
