Spartanburg, SC – Even though tonight's match was a scrimmage, the Converse College Volleyball team treated it like a real game day and they did not disappoint. After weeks of practice to prepare for their spring championship season, the Valkyries held the first of two Purple and Gold Scrimmages to end their fall season. The format consisted of 3 sets and the players were divided into two teams.
The scrimmage provided a lot of back and forth, with both teams trading points. While the Purple team defeated the Gold team 2-1, that was not the story of the night. Head Coach,
Amy Bomar, was anxious to see how her team would compete against each other in a real game atmosphere. Middles,
Jasmine Finkley and
Elizabeth Coffey, dominated the net offensively. It didn't matter where the pass was, they were ready to be set. Offensively,
Savannah Ducote showed tonight that she can run an offense that will be successful and keep opponents on their toes. Coach Bomar, believes her connection with the middles is going to take this team to the next level. The scrimmage also saw the return of
Ansley Hodge and
Elizabeth Yohe, who both had suffered season ending injuries. Their performances tonight was a tribute to the hard work they have put in during the past year.
"I am beyond excited that this team got to participate in a Purple/Gold scrimmage", said Head Coach
Amy Bomar. "I think the fact that we were able to have a competitive 6 vs 6 intersquad match says a lot about the depth of our team. The entire match stayed competitive. Each player definitely had their moment when they shined. Both our offense and defense really impressed me tonight. I am eager to see how this team looks on Thursday night when we stay on our sides & do not intermingle after each set." Junior
Kelsey Elliott echoed the thoughts of her Coach. "It was really good to be back on the court playing with my team again. Things may look different right now but everyone is still super competitive and we all played like we never stopped. I can't wait to see what the future holds for our team".
The teams will return to action on Thursday when the Gold team will look to avenge their loss. Even though they are all teammates, everyone is taking the Purple and Gold Scrimmage seriously. It is a great opportunity for the team to bond but to also showcase their talents. Coach Bomar knows Thursday will, once again, be extremely competitive and that is exactly what she is looking for. If we learned anything from tonight's scrimmage, Thursday will not disappoint.
