Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elizabeth Yohe tallied nine kills and a career-high 25 digs, but it was not enough as the Converse (5-19, 1-7 CC) volleyball team lost a 5-set affair to the visiting Limestone (10-7, 7-2 CC) Saints on Saturday afternoon inside Hannah Gymnasium. The two clubs alternated sets, with Converse taking one and three by scores of 25-18, 25-18. Limestone took the even sets 25-23 and 25-13 before taking the match with a 15-10 fifth-set win.
Morgan Pearson joined Yohe with nine kills, while Ansley Hodge contributed eight kills of her own. Lauren Tharrington and Jordan Mrkvicka combined to dish out 46 assists and Sydney Allen tallied 21 digs on the defensive end.
Converse quickly jumped ahead 10-4 in set one behind the excellence service of Yohe. However, Limestone cut into the deficit with an 8-3 run, closing the gap to a single point (13-12). Not phased, the Valkyries continued to put pressure on the Saints, rebuilding the lead back to 22-16 late. LC claimed two points in a row, but three straight from the Vals gave Converse a 1-0 match lead.
Set two was evenly contested early with the two teams trading the first 20 points. With the score knotted at 10-all, Converse took six of seven to build a comfortable 16-11 lead. Unfortunately, Limestone did not back down, using an 11-3 burst to take a 22-19 lead. Converse, following kills from Alexis Pitts and Kaylee Owens, battled back to tie the set at 23, but Limestone took the final two points to even the match at 1-1.
The Valkyries came out firing on all cylinders in set three, establishing a huge 19-8 advantage after a stellar attack game. However, Limestone's Mia Bergan was able to collect six straight points at the service line to narrow the gap to 19-14. Kiara Cannon put a stop to the Saints run with a massive kill from her middle blocker position, igniting the Valkyries, who went on to take set two 25-18.
Limestone took complete control of set four. After jumping out to a double-digit lead (17-6), the Saints sent the match to the decisive fifth set with a big 25-13 set four win.
The all-important fifth set was that of runs. Limestone started the frame with the first five points before Converse came back with a 4-1 scoring run, cutting the lead to 6-4. Limestone held a slim 8-6 advantage at the switch and collected the next three points to build an 11-6 lead. From that point the Vals played catch up, ultimately falling to the Saints 15-10 in the fifth.
This contest concludes the season-long, six-game home stand for the Valkyries. Converse will be back in action on Tuesday, October 16, traveling to Pembroke, N.C. to take on UNC Pembroke in a non-conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
