Box Score TIGERVILLE, S.C.- Bri James breaks the Converse single-game scoring record dropping 35 points on 13-18 shooting, as the Valkyries picked up the series sweep against Conference Carolinas rival North Greenville, 77-74, on Tuesday evening.
Converse (3-12, 2-9) picked up their first Conference Carolinas road victory of the season and first since Jan. 6, 2011 in a road win over St. Andrews (formerly in Conference Carolinas).
Brianna James (Spartanburg, S.C./Byrnes H.S.) set a new career-high while breaking the school record previously held by Melissa Ballard ('04) when she scored 32 against NGU. James scored 35 points on 13-18 (72.2%) shooting from the floor. The freshman scored in double-figures for the 11th time this season and sixth straight contest.
Erin Horne (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with 13 points, while Khrystal Ellis (Greenville, S.C.) had eight points and seven boards and Logan Hollis (Spartanburg, S.C.) notched seven points and 11 boards.
The Valkyries exploded in the fourth quarter with 29 points to regain the lead and fight off the North Greenville (5-12, 3-8) attempted rally. Converse trailed 57-48 heading into the final 10 minutes as the Valkyries woke up the crowd in the first two minutes of the final stanza. Khrystal Ellis sparked a 10-2 run driving to the rack and drawing a foul. Ellis connected on 1-2 from the charity stripe. Bri James continued her attack knocking down the jumper and finishing off the old fashioned three-point play. Hollis would grab the offensive board on the Valkyries' third possession of the quarter and knock down the baby hook.
After the third consecutive turnover by NGU's Carter, Bri James knocked down another jumper. The Valkyries would hold the Crusader's scoreless for the first 3:09 of the quarter before NGU would break the drought with a jumper. Erin Horne finished off the run with a jumper.
Reagan Barnard (Rio Rancho, N.M.) would bring the Valkyries to within one after knocking down a corner trey. Ellis would give the Valkyries the lead momentarily, 63-62, with a jumper with 4:19 remaining. NGU would push their lead to 68-65 with 3:28 remaining before the Valkyries went on attack.
Bri James would connect on 1-2 from the line followed by Paige Johnson's (Greenville, S.C.) runner knotted things at 68-all. James finished off her second and-one of the quarter to give the Valkyries the 71-68 lead, which was never relinquished. The Valkyries pushed things to 74-68 before Carter scored the final five points of the contest for NGU.
Converse changed things up during halftime looking at a 42-25 deficit. NGU's Carter had 16 points at the half and didn't score again until the final minute of the game.
The Valkyries outscored NGU 48-32 in the second half. Converse shot 47.5% from the floor including 60% in the fourth quarter.
Converse heads on a mini road trip taking on King (Jan. 29) and Lees-McRae (Jan. 30) in Conference Carolinas action.
