Historic Win For Valkyries Over Pfeiffer

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Revenge was on the minds of the Valkyries on Tuesday evening as Converse took on Pfeiffer in a Conference Carolinas match.  Pfeiffer was the only team to beat the Valkyries in conference play last year.  Converse entered the match 0-13 all-time against Pfeiffer until the 1-0 shutout on Tuesday.

"The team played the best we've seen all season," said head coach Rick Parlow. "We played great at every position tonight. Pfeiffer is a great team and we played mentally tough for all 90 minutes.  It was a historical win for these girls and this program."

Converse, now 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas play, handed Pfeiffer (1-5-1, 0-2-1) their fifth loss on the season and keeping the Falcons winless in league play.

The Valkyries peppered the cage throughout the first half sending a season-high 14 shots towards the cage in the first 45 minutes alone.

Converse was granted a corner in the 35' and took advantage of it.  Georgia Jones (Solihull, England) finds Mariah Elliott (Tolland, Conn.) on the left side of the box.  Elliott moves around two defenders and crosses the ball across the face of the goal and connected with Nicole Doolittle (Orlando, Fla.) for the header goal and 1-0 lead.

The Valkyries took a 1-0 lead into the break and that's where the score would remain for the rest of the match.

Pfeiffer had some opportunities midway through the second half but the back line of the Valkyries kept the Falcon attack grounded.  In the 62' minute a Falcon through ball looked dangerous in front of goal but was scooped up by keeper Josee Waitrovich (Waupaca, Wisc.).

The Falcons' best chance came in the 71' off a corner kick but sailed it high over the crossbar.

Converse's back line anchored by Emily Barry (Wheaton, Ill.) kept Pfeiffer's leading scorer in check all night.  Cimone Francis (Courtice, Ontario), Halley Wisner (Rising Sun, Md.), Olivia Grose (Milford, Mass.) and Barry kept the Falcons to five shots on goal.

Converse outshot Pfeiffer 20-12 and posted 10 SOG.  Darby Boyd (Nags Head, N.C.) led the team with eight shots (five on target).

Josee Waitrovich picked up her third win in the cage and second straight shutout.  Waitrovich recorded five saves, four of which were in the first half.

The Valkyries take a step out of league play as they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. to face Chowan.  Converse defeated Chowan 3-0 last year at home.  Kick-off is a 1pm.
