Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Converse Soccer took on the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte in their season opener today at the Hayden Abney Fulp Field. The Royals scored in the 36th minute of the game to be the deciding goal over the Valkyries, 0-1.
Alexandra Marques (West Hill, CA) had an opportunity in the 23rdminute to put the Valkyries ahead after intercepting a ball at midfield as Jessyca Young came up with the save. Royals came out strong in the first half outshooting the Valkyries 7-4 with Caitlyn Rodrigues netting the team's only goal of the game.
Converse freshman goalkeeper Joscelyn Wallace (Vancouver, CAN) had a strong performance with seven saves on eight shots.
"In a game where both teams had chances, I congratulate Queens for producing the moment of quality that turned out to be the difference," commented head soccer coach John Constable. "I credit our team for battling hard and making a game of it until the very end. We faced a tough opponent immediately on our regular season schedule. This shall stand us in good stead for upcoming games."
Olivia Grose (Milford, MA) had a chance to tie the game in the 76thminute on a breakaway before Young laid out to prevent the goal.
The Valkyries take the pitch next when they travel to Mars Hill University, Wednesday, September 10th with a 7:30PM kickoff.
