Converse Ranked Second in Winter Hawn Cup Standings

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas office released the Joby Hawn Cup winter standings and Converse University finished second overall in this year's rankings.
 
The Converse University athletic department finished second overall this winter with an 71.1 percentage. This is the second season in a row that the Valkyries have been ranked in the top-three of the overall standings of the Hawn Cup. The men's swim team, and both indoor track & field teams had runner-up finishes at the Conference Carolinas Championships this past winter. Finishing just ahead of the Valkyries in first place was UNC Pembroke with an 81.0 percent mark in the standings. Ranked right below the Valkyries was North Greenville (70.5%), Lees-McRae (67.3%) and Young Harris (66.9%).
 
In the women's only Hawn Cup standings the Valkyries are ranked fifth with a 70.6 percent rating. The women's track & field team had a runner-up finish at the Conference Carolinas Championships and freshman Grace Davis won the National Championship in the 60 meter dash. The women's swim team posted their fourth straight top-five finish at the Conference Championships this past winter. Ranked just ahead of the Valkyries are Lees-McRae (80.1%), Francis Marion (78.2%), Belmont Abbey (73.1%) and North Greenville (73.1%).
 
In the men's only Hawn Cup standings the Valkyries are third overall with a 71.6 percent rating. Both the men's swim team and track & field teams posted runner-up finishes at the Conference Carolinas Championships this past winter. Between the two teams the Valkyries brought home three athlete of the year awards. Ranked ahead of the Valkyries are UNC Pembroke (94.1%) and Young Harris (91.0%). North Greenville (67.6%) and Mount Olive (66.4%) finished right behind the Valkyries in fourth and fifth place respectfully.    
 
The Hawn Cup is named after H.C. "Joby" Hawn, who in 1962 became the first full-time Commissioner of what was then known as the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and now Conference Carolinas. Following his retirement from the conference in 1976, Conference Carolinas began awarding the Hawn Cup annually in his honor.
