Converse Ranked Fourth in Final Hawn Cup Standings

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas office released the Joby Hawn Cup final standings on Wednesday afternoon, Converse ranked fourth overall in the standings.
 
The Hawn Cup is the annual all-sports award for Conference Carolinas. Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish and the number of participating teams in each sport. Additionally, bonus points are awarded to the tournament champion and the tournament runner-up.
 
Converse finished with an overall percentage of 70.5, placing just ahead of North Greenville in the standings. UNC Pembroke won the Cup with a 77.1 percent, followed by Belmont Abbey (74.2) and Mount Olive (70.8).
 
In the women's only standings the Valkyries finished fifth with a 66.1 percentage. Belmont Abbey finished first with a 75.9 percent, followed by Francis Marion (74.3), North Greenville (72.4) and UNC Pembroke (67.6).
 
In the men's only standings, Converse finished second with a 78.2 percentage. UNC Pembroke finished first with an 89.7 percentage, followed by Young Harris (77.2) in third, Mount Olive (77.)) in fourth and Belmont Abbey (72.3).
 
During the fall semester, every fall athletic team competed in the postseason for the Valkyries. The women's cross country team finished runner-up at the Conference Carolinas Championships for the second straight season, while the volleyball team made a return trip to the Conference Carolinas Tournament Semifinals. The women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the conference tournament this past fall and the field hockey team made it to the opening round of their conference tournament.
 
On the men's side, the Valkyries cross country team finished fourth at the Conference Championship meet, while the men's soccer team made it to the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament.
 
During the winter sports season, the women's track & field team finished runner-up at the Conference Carolinas indoor championships. Freshman Grace Davis won the national championships in the 60 meter dash this past season. The women's swim team posted their fourth straight top-five finish at the Conference Championships this past winter.
 
On the men's side, both the men's swim team and track & field programs posted runner-up finishes at the Conference Championship meets. Between the two teams the Valkyries brought home three Player of the Year awards.
During the Spring season, the lacrosse team made it back to the Conference Carolinas tournament for the first time in two years. Meanwhile, the Converse University golf team finished fifth overall in the championships. The Converse softball team made history at the Conference Carolinas softball tournament by winning two games as the 12 seed in the tournament.
 
At the Outdoor Track & Field championships both the men's and women's teams finished runner-up at the championships. Devron Davis was named Track Athlete of the Year, while Neale Johnson was named Freshman of the Year by the leagues coaches.
 
The Hawn Cup is named after H.C. "Joby" Hawn, who in 1962 became the first full-time Commissioner of what was then known as the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and now Conference Carolinas. Following his retirement from the conference in 1976, Conference Carolinas began awarding the Hawn Cup annually in his honor.
