MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – For the second time this academic year, junior
Ruth Spijker of the Converse University women's track and field team has brought home a Conference Carolinas academic award. On April 26, she was honored at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships with the conference's Elite 23 Award, awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the championship site.
The award is modeled after the NCAA's Elite 90 Award and it allows all student-athletes at the final championship site to win the award. The Elite 90 is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the national championship site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
Spijker, a chemistry major from Sint Pancrasalso, The Netherlands, also found success on the track at the meet, bringing home gold in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:52.20.
The Sint-Pancras native was also honored this academic year as the Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Women's Cross Country.
