Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Valkyries Never Quit, Force Draw with Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – The Converse University men's soccer team (4-4-1, 3-2-1 Conference Carolinas) found themselves in what many would have called an insurmountable late-game deficit to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (3-3-2, 2-2-2 Conference Carolinas), but scored two goals in the final six minutes of the game to force a 2-2 draw between the divisional rivals.

Belmont Abbey struck first with a goal just 33 seconds into the match. Despite another nine shots between both teams for the remainder of the first half, neither team found the back of the net in the first half after the opening goal.

That second goal didn't come until the 74th minute as Belmont Abbey doubled its lead.

Never ones to give up, the Valkyries cut the lead in half with a beautiful cross from junior Jesper Schierholz to freshman Jacob Bandel who had no choice but to put the perfect pass past the Crusaders' keeper.

Another beautiful pass came from Schierholz who got the ball into the box with 2:47 to play. Freshman Owen Nero, realizing he did not have a clean look at the goal, took just one touch and tapped the ball to junior Kade Smith who had a wide-open look past the Crusaders' keeper, tying the game 2-2.

Neither team managed another shot on goal for the final two minutes and 45 seconds as the divisional contest ended 2-2.
