Verona and Fontes Earn D2CCA Southeast Region Honors

SALISBURY, N.C. – Following a successful year that saw the Converse men's soccer team earn an at-large bid to and host a game in the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Championship, seniors Gabriel Verona and Guilherme Fontes earned D2CCA Southeast Region honors.

Verona was named to the first team while Fontes was a second-team selection. It is the second time in as many years that Verona earned all-region honors. He was named to the second team last season.

Verona, a senior from Santa Catarina, Brazil, was selected as the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year. He appeared and started in all 19 games this season, playing all 90 minutes 10 times during the regular season, all 110 minutes in both postseason games and playing less than 60 minutes just once. Verona anchored the Valkyries backline and helped the team record the second-most shutouts in Conference Carolinas this season. He was twice named the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week. Verona earned all-conference accolades for the second consecutive year as well.

Fontes, a junior from São Paulo, Brazil, played in all 19 games this season and made 18 starts. He finished the season second in Conference Carolinas in goals with nine and fourth in assists with seven. Fontes was the conference's second-leading scorer with 25 points and led the league in game-winning goals with four. Across two double-overtime postseason games, Fontes logged 218 minutes on the pitch.

Super-Region II top seed Limestone led the way with six players named to the all-region teams, four first-team members and two second-team members. The South Atlantic Conference led the region with 12 all-region selections, six first team and six second team. Conference Carolinas followed with nine selections, four first team and five second team. The remaining five selections came from the Peach Belt.
