Valkyries Down Lions to Earn Spot in Conference Semifinals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A first-half penalty-kick goal was the difference for the No. 3 Converse University men's soccer team (11-3-5, 8-1-4 Conference Carolinas) as they defeated the No. 6 Emmanuel University Lions (8-8-2, 8-5 Conference Carolinas) 1-0 in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Championship Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.

The Valkyries outshot the Lions 15-9 and held a 9-5 advantage on shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Thiago Ausland recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win. He posted four saves in the game.

The difference in the game came early in the 35th minute as sophomore forward Jacob Bandel was fouled in the box by the Lions' keeper, resulting in a penalty kick that he buried to the bottom left corner of the net.

The Valkyries held the 1-0 lead for the remaining 56 minutes, securing their spot in the semifinals.
