GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sitting atop the Conference Carolinas standing isn't for the weak and doesn't come with at least a pair of star players. Junior Guilherme Fontes and senior Gabriel Verona of Converse men's soccer proved that as they swept Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

Fontes picked up his second offensive player of the week honor behind an eight-point week. He netted a pair of goals and an assist as the team returned from hiatus against Lees-McRae, pushing the Valkyries to a 3-1 victory over the Bobcats. In Saturday's 4-0 victory over Erskine, Fontes tallied one goal and one assist.

The São Paulo native ranks seventh nationally in points per game and is tied for tenth in total points. He leads Conference Carolinas in both categories.

Verona led the Valkyries' back line with 157 minutes played across the two games. The Valkyries held opponents to 11 combined shots in the pair of victories, including just one in the 4-0 victory at Erskine. Only four of the 11 shots were on goal.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 16 as they host Belmont Abbey at Weisiger Stadium for a 7:30 kickoff.
